The Love Of Beer

Great Lakes Edmund Fitzgerald Porter

Edmund Fitzgerald Porter (Great Lakes Brewing Co. - Cleveland, OH)

As part of our continuing study of the great beers of the Great Lakes, we were enticed to try the Porter.

Actually, check that, it came in our sampler pack and we’re not the type to let beer go to waste.

When we first opened the puppy up, we noticed immediately the chocolate and caramel aromas wafting from the bottle. For us, that’s kind of a big deal, since we truly have no sense of smell.

As per usual, we took ourselves a nice picture of the bottle and the goblet, which in this case is quite a visually attractive mess, wouldn’t you say? When you pour out of the bottle, it doesn’t do that milkshake thing that Guinness does. Then again, we kind of like that effect.

Our first sip was heavenly. (What a surprise!) The chocolate and coffee oozed down our esophagus along with a distinctly hoppy flavor. Make no mistake about it, this is not your typical Imperial Porter. If the flavor of a traditional porter can be compared to a boxing match, then the drinkability of the Fitz more closely resembles a sorority house pillow fight.

We enjoyed it thoroughly, and looked forward to enjoying it once again. Wait! There’s still three more in the sampler pack!

Now we don’t have to go and buy anymore beer.

Of course, until the pack runs out. We shudder at that notion.

Rating: 4.5 pints

Mmm. More Great Lakes brews. I could live on this stuff.
I’d add to the above review that in addition to the coffee/chocolate flavors, there’s also a distinct caramel flavor, and a slight nut flavor as the porter warms. The hops is slightly fruity, which balances the bitter roast malt nicely, and the porter has a touch of tobacco on the finish.  Mouthfeel is nice, somewhat satiny, not quite chewy.

Try to slow down and enjoy your Fitz - this stuff is almost *too* drinkable. When I buy this, the only reason I don’t finish a 6-pack by myself is that after three of them, I’m on the floor and can’t reach the remaining bottles.

It doesn’t sounds too good, I mean coffee, chocolate, and beer?!  The flavors are too strong and disparate.  I don’t think I’d drink this beer.

That looks incredible. Yummy!Chocolate? Coffee? Beer? how could that possibly taste bad.

RPO don’t knock it till you try it!

Really, RPO? You must not drink porters and stouts, because chocolate/coffee is a primary flavour component in each. In fact, judging guidelines state that the flavor of either/both should be there in order for the brew to be considered a proper porter or stout.

I just find it funny that the glass is dirty.

if you like the beer, should try the ice cream made from the beer at the restaurant.  the chocolate chunks are made with the fitz in it.  best ice cream i’ve ever had.

Paul, the glass is not dirty. That’s called carbonation bubbles. Thanks for playing.
