The Love Of Beer

Full of Schlitz: Hey, Watch Your Mouth!

Posted by Conditional Love inThe Six-pack on Saturday, August 02, 2008

“The Beer That Made Milwakee Famous” is back on shelves at a supermarket near you (provided you live near Milwaukee.)

This isn’t your daddy’s Schlitz that shocked the beer world by changing up their recipe to an undrinkable mix of sewer water and dandelion seeds. This is the genuine article, baby.

Historically speaking, Schlitz began in 1849 as a pilsner of high drinkability that led to Milwaukee being dubbed the beer capital of the United States. This was before Miller got Lite, Budweiser got big and Coors started pillaging the rockies for coldness.

Pabst bought the downtrodden brand in 1999, but had not truly recreated the old formula ... until now. Their aim is go after the youth, creating a new generation of Schlitzheads. This isn’t too much of a change from Pabst’s previous marketing efforts, which seem to work well with those in their early 20s who prefer to attain a pounding headache before they become drunk.

Currently, there is a shortage of the brand, as local Milwaukee beer vendors have run out of the bubbly blonde.

Ahh, yes. Nostalgia meets carbonation.

Somebody needs to bring back Red Dog, stat.

Schlitz, the very name almost makes me cringe with fear as I am a “hop head”.  To pass up the opportunity to try such an iconic beer though, would be a crime against humanity.  I can’t wait until I come across it, I shall pick up a 6 pack promptly.  My wife however, may wonder why I’m drinking that instead of Guinness/Sam Adams.  Red Dog, talk about a cheap beer that had decent taste and got you drunk, at least that’s what I remember as a teenager. smile

The can is so cool and retro but the beer doesn’t look that great.  I think I’d like to see the favorite of Springfieldians Duff become a beer first.
