Rogue Dead Guy Ale
Dead Guy Ale (Rogue - Portland, OR)
Deadheads, hippies and hipsters love this beer.
Call it the Magic Hat or Dogfish Head of the west coast, if you will.
We’d never had the beer until very recently, as it is quite difficult to procure in this corner of the world, but we were definitely intrigued by the label. I mean, Dead Guy Ale, certainly implies some sort of caustic, harrowing beer-drinking experience, wouldn’t you say?
The beer, however - thankfullly, is not as strong of a punch in the face as you’d think. It’s a decidedly fruity and flowery ale (some hints of passionfruit, of all things) that goes down smoother than it probably should. It’s not an ale as in Pale Ale; it is merely a malty, sweet and hoppy piece of German-style Bock. It goes down smooth, like fresh-baked bread, and can be enjoyed glass after glass.
If you can find a bar that carries this, and you are on the east coast, it is certainly worth at least one try. You probably won’t find it in too many establishments, but if you do, you should definitely return for that bar has great taste.
An excellent brew for those who love exquisite-tasting beers.
Sometimes labels can be misleading.
